US imposes 100% drone tariffs to curb China reliance

New US tariffs of up to 100 percent took effect Thursday on drones and certain components, targeting China's dominance in the industry and aiming to boost domestic supply chains. President Donald Trump signed the order in August, citing national security threats from drone imports. Drones over 25 kilograms, those with thermal imaging, and docking stations face the 100-percent rate, while smaller drones incur a 25-percent duty. Some component tariffs are delayed until February 9, 2026. China strongly opposed the move, with a commerce ministry spokesman saying it disrupts the global supply chain and undermines fair competition. Chinese firm DJI, holding over two-thirds of the global drone market, has been on a US military-linked list since 2022 and has contested its inclusion.
