UN agency raises alarm over rising migrant deaths at sea near Greece
The UN refugee agency has raised alarms over an increase in migrant deaths at sea near Greece, following two shipwrecks this week. Seventeen people have died this month, bringing the total to at least 45 for the year. Since January, over 56,000 migrants have entered Greece, surpassing previous government estimates. This marks the highest number of arrivals in five years, primarily from Turkey to the eastern Aegean islands. Recent incidents include a mother losing three children in a shipwreck near Samos. Greek authorities have linked the rise in arrivals to increased attempts to cross the Mediterranean, often facilitated by smuggling gangs.
