TRAI blocks 1.48 billion promotional calls in Q1 after DND checks
India's telecom regulator TRAI reported that 1.48 billion promotional calls were blocked in Q1 FY27 after verification against customer do-not-disturb preferences, out of 13.16 billion total promotional calls made via the dedicated 140 series. Commercial SMS from registered senders reached 248.06 billion, with 7.30 billion promotional messages blocked. AI-based spam detection flagged 24.43 billion suspected calls and SMS, while action was taken against 183,000 telecom resources and 263 senders were blacklisted. The 140 series was introduced for promotional calls and the 1600 series for service calls from banking and government entities. Total UCC complaints stood at 1.085 million against 730.82 billion total calls, equating to roughly 1.5 complaints per million calls.
