Tata Sons approves Rs 10,000 crore Air India infusion with conditions

timesofindia.indiatimes.com

Tata Sons' board has approved a fresh capital infusion of over Rs 10,000 crore into Air India, its largest commitment since the 2021 acquisition, but the approval is conditional on business case presentations from the airline and other ventures. The decision, made at a June board meeting, comes after Tata Sons paused equity injections for over a year, during which Air India's losses more than doubled to Rs 22,238 crore in FY26. The airline's outstanding debt now stands at about Rs 40,000 crore across 11 lenders, with State Bank of India holding the largest exposure. Tata Sons' ability to provide guarantees is constrained by its pending RBI application to surrender its core investment company registration. Singapore Airlines, which owns 24.7% of Air India, would need to invest about Rs 3,350 crore to maintain its stake without dilution.
