Tamil Nadu to issue digital driving licences and vehicle registration certificates from September 15

Tamil Nadu will introduce digital driving licences and vehicle registration certificates from September 15, letting new vehicle owners download their RC the same day and driving test candidates get their licence immediately, ending the current week-to-month wait for physical, chip-based cards sent by post. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced the reform in the Assembly on Wednesday. The new digital documents will use QR codes instead of embedded chips, allowing officials to scan and instantly verify authenticity, which the government says will help curb fake documents and simplify replacement of lost or damaged cards. The move aims to reduce delays and unnecessary RTO visits as part of a broader "Anywhere Registration/Licensing" system, to be phased in, that will eventually let citizens manage transport services at any RTO in the state regardless of residence.
