Suriname's president will share oil wealth

Suriname elected its first female president, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, who vowed to ensure the nation's oil wealth benefits all citizens. Geerlings-Simons, a former parliamentary speaker, won unopposed and will be inaugurated on July 16th. Her government takes office as TotalEnergies begins developing the GranMorgu offshore oil project. Suriname's economy is projected to grow significantly with the oil boom, as reserves are estimated at 760 million barrels. The NDP secured a majority through a coalition.
