Police warn of rising parcel thefts during holiday season
Police are warning about an increase in parcel thefts this holiday season. A recent arrest in North Canterbury involved a 29-year-old suspected of stealing from rural mailboxes. Authorities found opened mail, a firearm, and ammunition at the suspect's property. Inspector Brett Callander noted that thieves may act opportunistically or plan their thefts by following delivery trucks. Rural areas are particularly vulnerable due to their distance from neighbors, making it harder to catch thieves. To prevent theft, residents are advised to consider alternative delivery options, like sending parcels to work or using click-and-collect services. Installing cameras and working with neighbors can also help deter thieves and aid investigations.
