Over 85 lakh farmers in northern India owe Rs 2.20 lakh crore in loans
Over 85 lakh farmers in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh owe a total of Rs 2.20 lakh crore in loans from various banks. Punjab has the highest debt, with farmers owing Rs 1,04,064 crore. Haryana has the most farmers with outstanding loans, totaling 40.22 lakh and Rs 96,855 crore. Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh have smaller amounts, with 6.67 lakh farmers owing Rs 12,897 crore and 0.60 lakh farmers owing Rs 6,038 crore, respectively. The finance minister stated that there are no current plans to waive these loans. The data was provided in response to a parliamentary question regarding farmers' debts across different states.
