New catalysts enable greener ammonia production from nitrate-polluted water

nature.com —

Researchers developed new catalysts using ultra-dispersed metal oxide nanoparticles on graphitic carbon nitride for electrochemical nitrate reduction, offering a greener alternative to the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch ammonia production process. The study tested CuFe2O4, NiFe2O4, and Fe2O3 nanoparticles on graphitic carbon nitride, finding CuFe2O4@gCN performed best with 21% Faradaic efficiency toward ammonium at -1.15 V versus RHE, plus higher production rates and less nitrite generation. This open-access research, published under a Creative Commons license, suggests potential for sustainable ammonia generation from nitrate-contaminated water, addressing both agricultural needs and water pollution simultaneously.
