Lung cancer patients with localized disease show improved survival after double lung transplants

Lung cancer patients with disease confined to the lungs showed improved survival after double lung transplants, a study found. Northwestern Medicine reported 17 patients with advanced but localized lung cancer fared better than 81 receiving standard treatments. All transplant patients survived one year, compared to 88% of non-cancer transplant recipients. The study, published in JAMA, suggests a potential new treatment avenue, though larger randomized trials are needed to confirm these findings and address ethical organ allocation concerns.
