Luis Rubio resigns as Renovación Popular's Lima mayoral candidate
Luis Rubio Idrogo has resigned irrevocably from his candidacy for Mayor of Lima under the Renovación Popular party, where he was running alongside Rafael López Aliaga as deputy mayor. The resignation was submitted to the Jurado Electoral Especial de Lima Centro, just one day before the deadline for admitting candidate lists. Rubio communicated his decision in a document, citing "strictly personal reasons" and requesting that the resignation be processed according to the law. His candidacy had already been admitted and included in the definitive list of applicants, making this a late-stage withdrawal. The resignation comes ahead of the August 5 deadline for publishing admitted candidate formulas and processing resignations under the 2026 Municipal and Regional Elections schedule. Renovación Popular has not yet issued an official statement regarding the decision.
