Large sinkhole in Merthyr grows, delaying return for evacuated residents

A large sinkhole in Nant Morlais has grown since it first appeared on December 1, leading to extended evacuations for local residents. The sinkhole, measuring 50 feet, resulted in the evacuation of 30 homes. The local council previously attributed the sinkhole to a culvert collapse caused by Storm Bert. They had planned emergency repairs, but rising water levels have delayed these efforts, requiring a crane to stabilize the area. As of Thursday, the council stated that residents may not be able to return home until at least early next week, depending on weather conditions. The situation remains under close monitoring.
