Ireland's bus and train fares to rise 15% on average

Bus and train fares in Ireland will rise by about 15 percent on average under new measures announced Thursday by the National Transport Authority, with the Dublin 90-minute fare increasing from €2 to €2.30. Some fares for children and young adults will decrease, while specific other fares may rise by up to 30 percent. Free travel for children up to age nine and older people will continue, and the changes come amid government pressure over the rising cost of living. The exchequer provided €940 million this year to offset public service obligation route costs, which have risen by €350 million since 2019. Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien previously said fare hikes were not off the table, citing the need for a sustainable funding model.
