New research suggests bowel cancer has a "Big Bang" moment where immune escape determines its future growth. This critical event involves cancer cells disrupting genes to hide from the immune system. After this point, the cancer's presentation to the immune system changes very little. The findings, published in Nature Genetics, could help identify patients likely to respond to immunotherapy and lead to more targeted treatments.
