Hertfordshire Zoo lion euthanized after eye procedure reveals kidney failure

A male lion at Hertfordshire Zoo was euthanized on Wednesday after a health assessment during an eye procedure revealed advanced, irreversible kidney failure. His condition deteriorated quickly following the discovery. Sahee, who arrived at the zoo in 2025 from Le Pal Wildlife Park in France, underwent the procedure because his eyelid was rubbing against and scratching his cornea. During the operation, staff collected blood samples and swabs to avoid future anaesthesia. The zoo stated the decision to put him to sleep was made to prevent further suffering and ensure his welfare remained paramount. He was one of the inaugural residents of the new Lions of India habitat and had quickly won over his keepers.
