Extreme weather events increase risks for older adults in Florida
Extreme weather events have increased in frequency and intensity, posing greater risks to older adults. Hurricanes, floods, and heat waves have become more common, particularly affecting vulnerable populations in states like Florida, which has a high percentage of residents aged 65 and older. Recent hurricanes, such as Milton, have caused significant damage and fatalities, with older adults being particularly impacted due to mobility issues and reliance on medical equipment. The aging population in the U.S. is expected to grow, further increasing the number of seniors at risk during such disasters. FEMA's National Risk Index shows that coastal areas, especially in Florida, are among the most vulnerable to extreme weather. Nine of the top ten riskiest counties are in Florida, highlighting the urgent need for preparedness among older adults and their caregivers.
