A wild female elephant died after falling into an old, unsealed sewage tank cavity at the Danum Valley Field Centre in Lahad Datu. The elephant was discovered alive but could not be rescued due to a nearby herd posing a safety risk. It was confirmed dead the following day with no signs of foul play. This is the first reported elephant death in the Danum Valley area this year. The carcass was buried on-site.
