Dutch swimming water quality stagnates as chemical pollution goes unreported

A new study finds Dutch swimming water quality is stagnating, with chemical pollutants exceeding standards at all tested locations in 2024, yet swimmers receive no information about these risks. Researchers from Natuur & Milieu and NIOO-KNAW analyzed hundreds of sites from 2015-2024, finding 35 of 122 substances exceeded norms. Monitoring focuses on bacteria, while chemical contamination, including pesticides and PFAS, goes unreported to the public. The Netherlands faces EU penalties in 2027 for violating the Water Framework Directive. While immediate health risks are unclear, long-term exposure may link to cancer and hormone disruption, prompting calls for stricter oversight and source identification.
