Drones spot sharks, close New York beaches

New York City beaches, particularly Rockaway Beach, were closed repeatedly due to increased shark sightings detected by drones. Swimmers were ordered out of the ocean each time a shark was spotted. The closures, starting Tuesday, occurred during the busy Fourth of July weekend as city and state officials increased drone use to monitor for sharks. At least six sightings prompted beach shutdowns, impacting holiday plans for beachgoers. The state's increased shark monitoring includes 48 trained drone operators. Swimming is prohibited for at least an hour after a confirmed sighting, with drones now a common sight at the beach.
