Daily steps rival structured workouts for asthma control
A new study suggests that increasing daily steps may be as effective as structured aerobic training for managing moderate to severe asthma, offering patients a more flexible treatment option. Researchers from the University of São Paulo studied 52 physically inactive adults with uncontrolled asthma, dividing them into supervised treadmill sessions or a walking program with step goals. Both groups showed improved asthma control, quality of life, and reduced anxiety and depression symptoms, with benefits lasting four months. The behavioral group maintained a slightly higher step count at follow-up, though weather changes were cited as a barrier to continued activity. The study emphasizes that both interventions complement, rather than replace, prescribed asthma medication.
