California confirms two new gray wolf packs as population grows to 70
California wildlife officials have confirmed two new gray wolf packs in Northern California, increasing the estimated wolf population to at least 70, up from 44 last year. This marks a significant rise from just one pack four years ago. The new packs are located about 50 miles north of Lake Tahoe and south of Lassen Volcanic National Park. The population growth is expected to continue, with more pups born this year, potentially leading to "almost exponential" growth. As the wolf population increases, challenges arise, particularly regarding livestock protection. The state is partnering with UC Berkeley to study the ecological and social impacts of wolves in California, aiming to inform management strategies.
