Bradford HIV nurse retires after 36 years on front line

bbc.com

Simon Corcos, a specialist HIV nurse at Bradford Teaching Hospitals, is retiring after 36 years, having witnessed HIV care transform from terminal illness to manageable condition. Corcos began at Middlesex Hospital in the late 1980s, when HIV had no treatment. Combination triple therapy from 1996 changed outcomes, and he joined Bradford Teaching Hospitals in 2006, treating several thousand patients. Corcos stressed stigma remains. Patients with undetectable viral loads can have HIV-free babies and cannot pass on the virus, but no cure exists. Chief Nurse Karen Dawber praised his compassion.
