BioNTech posts €1.35B loss as CEO Sahin to step down in 2027

BioNTech reported a net loss of 1.35 billion euros in the first half of 2026, driven by sharply lower global demand for its COVID-19 vaccine. The company also confirmed that co-founder Uğur Şahin will step down as CEO in early February 2027. Second-quarter losses widened to 820.8 million euros, with revenue falling to 105.6 million euros from 260.8 million a year earlier. BioNTech lowered its full-year revenue forecast to 1.6-1.9 billion euros and reduced planned R&D spending, citing existing German vaccine stockpiles and cost discipline. The company plans to close sites in Germany and Singapore by 2027 while prioritizing its oncology pipeline, including the drug candidate Pumitamig. Şahin will be succeeded by Guido Oelkers, and he and his wife plan to found a new company while retaining their BioNTech shares.
