Bangladeshi foreign minister elected president of the UN General Assembly

Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has been elected President of the UN General Assembly. He will succeed Germany's Annalena Baerbock. Rahman secured 99 out of 193 votes, defeating Cypriot diplomat Andreas Kakouris. He will assume the one-year term in September. Baerbock's own election in 2025 was controversial. Rahman was appointed Bangladesh's Foreign Minister in February.
