Bangladesh to elect new president August 20 after Shahabuddin resigns

Bangladesh will elect its next president on August 20, the Election Commission announced, following Mohammed Shahabuddin’s resignation amid political pressure after Sheikh Hasina’s ouster. Shahabuddin resigned July 24 after sustained demands from student groups and parties, having been elected in 2023 with Awami League backing. Nominations close August 13, scrutiny occurs August 16, and withdrawal ends August 18. The presidency is largely ceremonial, with the winner chosen by parliament members. Under the 1991 act, an election must be held within 90 days of a vacancy. Since 1991, only one presidential vote required balloting.
