Anuparna Roy directs a love story challenging societal norms

Anuparna Roy won the Orizzonti award for Best Director at the 82nd Venice Film Festival for her debut film, "Songs of the Forgotten Trees." The film tells the story of two migrant women in Bombay, a sex worker and a call center employee, who fall in love and navigate societal norms and their own flaws. Roy was inspired by the close bond between her widowed grandmother and her aunt, and aims to challenge the male gaze in cinema.
