15,000 Singapore taxpayers hit by NSman tax relief error

About 15,000 Singaporean taxpayers received incorrect NSman tax relief amounts due to a system error, affecting assessments for tax years 2025 and 2026. Roughly 7,000 will face higher tax bills, while about 8,000 will receive refunds. The error stemmed from faulty NS activity records generated by MINDEF's system, which were used to calculate reliefs. MINDEF discovered the issue in May 2026 and worked with IRAS to correct assessments, with revised notices to be issued by September 2026. Most adjustments are under S$200, with total recoveries of S$930,000 and refunds of S$995,000. Affected taxpayers need not act before receiving revised notices, and GIRO instalments will adjust automatically. The relief, recognizing NS contributions, provides S$1,500 annually to NSmen, with additional amounts for active service and S$750 for eligible parents and spouses.
